Safe City: Platform for Street Level Communication

Brief
With increased terrorist threat Russian town decided to set up world’s first public interactive citizen & tourist info system with high surveillance capacity. Russian telecommunication company (Rostelekom) designed network of 29 all-weather kiosks, 2 years after single unit pilot project took place.

Situation analysis
City of Nizhny Novgorod is considered as Russian technology hub, and a place where innovation many times occur first. With growing pain of public safety, city wanted to improve security and create platform for street level communication with citizens and visitors.

Solution
Network of 29 touch interactive external public LCD signs. On one hand these displays are regular city information kiosks enabling citizens and visitors to browse through GUI, as well as security devices with high resolution surveillance cameras and emergency call system integrated.

These units are extremely secure, so installed units had to be made to operate for extended periods of time even without power. Truly unique in quality units were deployed after successful 2 year pilot project. As external public safety displays are spread all across valuable to advertisers frequent passersby locations, municipality can commercialize all or part of playlist to generate revenues. Network can be used for emergency messaging digital signage in case of catastrophes or any other public event.

Public display
Rostelekom chose imotion G6 55” portrait single side units as appropriate for this application. Units have integrated touch screen, emergency call line (microphone – speaker), top-mounted surveillance cameras and high power UPS solution.
