Barakaldo Promotes Tourist and Cultural offer with Digital Signs

Around the world, smart city projects are popping up with unique solutions to longstanding urban challenges. One of these projects is a small network of custom outdoor LCD kiosks in the municipality of Barakaldo.

Situation analysis
Barakaldo is a municipality located in the Biscay province in Spain. It’s known for annual celebration “Las Fiestas del Carmen”, which includes open-air concerts and large fairs. For such events good connections between stages and proper wayfinding solution is needed. The town was looking to enhance citizens and tourists experience, to ease their way around the area. They wanted to inform citizens, acquire data, promote efficiency, and also generate revenue. Simple outdoor LCD kiosk was not a solution. LCD totem had to interactively communicate and also be visible enough to catch eyes of the passers. For communication smaller 32” or 46” display, with integrated touch screen was a better choice. Contrary, for capturing attention a bigger high bright display was the way to go. There was also a problem of reliability. Outdoor LCD kiosk had to be robust enough to defy the Spanish weather.

Solution
To satisfy all the needs of Barakaldo, custom digital sign was created. Standard freestanding imotion G6 55-inch totem was customized with integration of a 32-inch interactive multimedia info pillar.

Barakaldo choose G6 technology because of self-regulated thermal management and automatic maintenance calls. Systems with this technology are intelligent. Its health can be monitored. They do not demand regular maintenance, as systems will call you on site when failure occurs, and when filters need cleaning or replacement. Automatic maintenance call and failure notification makes maintenance and support of the units much easier. Final result is less time spent at the location, leading to lower after-purchase activities and cost for the city.

Public display
Three imotion G6 55" Portrait Freestanding with 32” multimedia info pillar has been placed in strategic locations in the Barakaldo town. It is estimated that displays will see 10.000 people on a daily basis. In terms of content, total of six screens provide information relating to POI, promote local culture events and places and also inform citizens about important issues.

Our intention is to generate a flow of visitors to the center and commercial and leisure areas to encourage shopping tourism," said David Solla, mayor of Economic and Business Development of the City Council. - M.
