OEM LCD OPERATIONAL TEMPERATURE AND ITS EFFECT ON EXTERNAL SIGNS

LCD panel, as any other electronics device, is influenced by temperature of environment they operate within. Exposing OEM LCD temperature ranges helps us to understand and differentiate quality of outdoor LCD digital signs. Their purpose is to sustain at least warranted environment and in best case to deliver optimal (tech specs) luminance output.

LCD operation temperature ranges

Most of manufacturers are specifying same temperature ranges. Initial testing temperature that tech specs are based on are “room temperature” at 25±2˚C. Normal operation temperature is considered between 10 ˚C and 40 ˚C. Warranted operation limits are between 0 ˚C and 50 ˚C. Anything out of these boundaries will influence on sub-performance and eventually cause permanent damage.

  • 25±2˚C – This is temperature where luminance output is same as specified in tech specs. In most systems this is impossible to reach, unless powerful cooling system is used (e.g. imotionG7 technology).
  • 10 – 40 ˚C – Normal operation range presents minimal drop in brightness performance output and this is healthy temperature range.
  • 0 – 50 ˚C – Warranted operation range is maximal range of inner enclosure temperatures for decent external LCD digital signs.


Ambient temperature effect on luminance output coefficient
LCD technology utilizes backlight to operate. LED light operates better as temperature drops. Basically, it is possible to have higher than specified luminance output if cooling the enclosure enough.

How does it apply to differentiating outdoor LCD digital signs!?

Quality of external LCD digital signs depends heavily, not only on Integrated LCD panel, but also on thermal conditioning, that will either enable great operation or limit it to minimum. In addition higher temperatures will speed up component degradation and cause higher power consumption.Good systems will work within warranted temperature conditions environment (imotionFLOW and imotionLITE), great LCD thermal management systems will work in either normal operating conditions or even optimal ones (imotionG7 and imotionG6).
